Saab’s FFV Ordnance has reportedly secured the lowest-bidder position in the Indian Army’s tender for 450 Carl-Gustaf M4 launchers. The company has quoted around ₹71.87 crore for the requirement, which forms part of the Army’s wider effort to upgrade infantry weapons with lighter and more flexible systems. The proposed package includes the 450 launchers as well as accessories, spares, training and logistical support. The procurement falls under the Buy (Indian) category and is intended to support domestic manufacturing. Saab’s planned manufacturing facility at Jhajjar is set to become the company’s first Carl-Gustaf production location outside Sweden. After obtaining approval for 100% FDI, the Swedish defence company has said it will collaborate with Indian suppliers and expand local manufacturing under the Make in India framework. The Carl-Gustaf M4 is Saab’s newest 84mm recoilless launcher. Its unloaded weight of roughly 6.6–7 kg, excluding sights and accessories, makes it significantly lighter than previous versions. This reduction is important for infantry units that may have to carry the weapon and ammunition over long distances or during extended missions. The Army’s requirement also includes integration with modern optical and digital sighting technologies. Digital fire-control equipment and red-dot sights can help troops acquire targets faster and improve first-shot accuracy. Additional features include Picatinny rails for mounting accessories and improved ergonomics designed to make the launcher easier to handle. Saab’s lowest-bidder status also highlights the company’s expanding manufacturing ambitions in India. Its Jhajjar facility is expected to employ advanced industrial techniques such as carbon-fibre winding, while Indian subcontractors will contribute to the manufacturing supply chain. The proposed programme could consequently provide the Indian Army with an updated lightweight infantry weapon while simultaneously supporting the development of a domestic production ecosystem for the Carl-Gustaf M4.
