Four major Indian companies—TASL, Adani Defence, HAL and Ashok Leyland—are among the leading contenders for the Indian Coast Guard’s planned purchase of 10 MALE remotely piloted aircraft systems. Solar Industries and other interested vendors also took part in the pre-bid meeting, highlighting the level of industry interest in the competition. The proposed acquisition is aimed at improving the Coast Guard’s ability to conduct long-range maritime surveillance, reconnaissance and search-and-rescue operations. The systems are expected to provide sustained beyond-line-of-sight coverage, strengthen maritime security and improve monitoring throughout India’s Exclusive Economic Zone and in distant rescue areas. The initiative will expand the use of unmanned platforms alongside the Coast Guard’s current patrol aircraft and helicopter fleet. The involvement of established domestic defence manufacturers and aerospace firms also points to increasing capability within India’s indigenous unmanned aviation industry. Observers are likely to follow the programme closely because it could become one of the Coast Guard’s most important unmanned aircraft procurements while advancing the government’s emphasis on domestic defence production.
