Rolls-Royce has secured US Navy certification for its mtu Series 4000 and Series 2000 marine engines for integration into tactical unmanned surface vessel applications. The approval enables these propulsion systems to support autonomous platforms intended for missions lasting up to 30 days. Such deployments are designed to take place without onboard human intervention, maintenance activity, or repairs. The certification was granted under provisions of the US National Defense Authorization Act, which established performance benchmarks for propulsion technologies intended for autonomous systems. Rolls-Royce’s engines successfully met those requirements, clearing them for use in tactical USV applications. The approval expands the propulsion technologies available for unmanned maritime platforms and supports the US Navy’s wider move toward autonomous systems capable of sustaining long-duration missions without conventional crews aboard the vessel.
