Defence News: Sweden has started introducing its new Archer 8×8 self-propelled howitzers after receiving the first four vehicles from BAE Systems. The new 155mm artillery system will give Swedish forces higher road speed and better battlefield mobility. Sweden plans to receive more systems through 2030 as part of its wider artillery modernization program.
Sweden Orders 66 Archer Systems
Sweden first ordered 48 Archer 8×8 systems in September 2023. The deal was worth about $500 million.
In 2025, Sweden ordered another 18 howitzers. This increased the planned fleet to 66 systems.
The first four vehicles will support training. Swedish conscripts and artillery crews will use them to learn the new system.
Sweden expects two more vehicles to arrive in the fall. Full deliveries will continue through 2030.
New 8×8 Chassis Improves Mobility
The new Archer 8×8 differs from the original Archer system.
The earlier version uses an articulated 6×6 dumper chassis. The new model uses an 8×8 truck platform.
