General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has teamed up with Saab to develop an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system for the MQ-9B series of Remotely Piloted Aircraft. This effort covers platforms like the SkyGuardian®, SeaGuardian®, the UK’s Protector, and the new MQ-9B STOL variant under development. The first test flight of the AEW-equipped MQ-9B is expected in 2026.
By integrating Saab’s AEW sensors with the MQ-9B—the world’s most capable long-range, high-endurance unmanned system—this solution will provide enhanced air surveillance and control over land and sea. It offers a highly cost-effective alternative to traditional AEW&C platforms, delivering critical mission capabilities at a fraction of the cost.
