The Indian Navy has expanded its specialized underwater support capabilities with the induction of INS Nipun, the second vessel in the Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel program constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited. Delivered under a contract awarded in 2018, the ship enhances India’s ability to conduct complex underwater rescue, salvage, and diving operations while supporting both current and future submarine fleets.After entering construction in 2020 and being launched in 2022, INS Nipun now joins the fleet with advanced equipment designed for submarine rescue, underwater engineering projects, remotely operated vehicle deployment, and surveillance missions. A key operational feature is its ability to carry and deploy Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles, enabling emergency assistance to submarines experiencing accidents beneath the sea.The vessel combines twin diesel propulsion with precision dynamic positioning systems, sophisticated sonar technology, diver support facilities, specialized communications, and modern navigation systems. Its defensive suite incorporates electronic warfare systems, advanced fire control technology, and close-range naval guns for enhanced survivability during operations.Capable of remaining at sea continuously for around two months, INS Nipun reaches speeds of 18 knots while supporting deep diving missions to 300 meters and remotely controlled underwater operations extending to approximately one kilometer. These advanced capabilities substantially improve India’s underwater rescue and maritime support infrastructure.
