Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has launched the hydro-oceanographic vessel Quirinale for the Italian Navy at its Riva Trigoso facility, reinforcing the navy’s capacity for maritime research, seabed mapping, and environmental monitoring. The ship will support operations led by the Italian Hydrographic Institute across national and international waters.
Designed to host up to 140 personnel, the 110-meter-long vessel displaces approximately 6,000 tons and is engineered for operations in extreme climatic conditions, including temperatures down to –16 degrees Celsius. The platform is outfitted with advanced hydrographic, oceanographic, and geophysical instrumentation, as well as autonomous underwater and surface systems that enable complex survey and monitoring missions.
The vessel incorporates a dynamic positioning system to maintain stability during precision operations, along with specialized lifting equipment to deploy and recover scientific payloads. Environmental performance was a key design consideration, with features such as diesel-electric propulsion, optimized hull geometry, emission-control technologies, and the use of low-impact materials contributing to reduced environmental impact.
Fincantieri’s launch of Quirinale builds on a broader portfolio of recent naval programs, including the delivery of a multi-role supply ship to the Italian Navy and the introduction of the DEEP underwater drone system. These efforts highlight the company’s focus on integrating sustainability, advanced technology, and underwater capabilities into next-generation naval platforms.
