Peru and South Korea have formalized a framework agreement paving the way for Lima to acquire K2 Black Panther tanks and K808 White Tiger armored personnel carriers. The proposed deal is poised to become South Korea’s most significant ground equipment export to Latin America and marks the first time the K2 main battle tank will enter service in the region. The program will be pursued jointly with Hyundai Rotem and Peru’s government-owned weapons and ammunition manufacturer.

The plan outlines Peru’s intention to purchase 195 armored platforms, including 54 K2 tanks and 141 K808 armored vehicles. Although pricing has not been officially disclosed, multiple reports in South Korea point to a projected value of more than 2 trillion won ($1.3 billion). Contract details, including delivery schedules and production arrangements, are expected to be completed next year.

This growing cooperation mirrors the momentum generated by Poland’s $6.7-billion order of K2 tanks earlier this year, a major investment made to strengthen its forces amid regional tensions driven by the Russia-Ukraine war. Poland’s deal elevated the visibility of South Korean armored systems and reinforced their appeal to international buyers.

For South Korea, the Peruvian agreement is another step in its broader ambition to accelerate defense exports and enter new geographic markets. As the world’s tenth-largest arms exporter, Seoul has set a strategic goal of climbing to fourth place by 2027, banking on platforms like the K2 and K808 to drive its global expansion.
