Albania has signed a major defense cooperation agreement with Israel’s Elbit Systems, aiming to boost its firepower and expand its domestic arms-production capabilities. The package includes advanced 155mm ATMOS truck-mounted howitzers, 120mm SPEAR mortar systems, and two tactical drone models—Magni-X for reconnaissance missions and Thor for light-strike roles. This acquisition marks a significant leap in Albania’s ongoing effort to upgrade its NATO-standard military force.

The Magni-X is designed for long-endurance surveillance, capable of carrying lightweight payloads and operating for up to an hour, even in environments affected by GPS interference. The heavier Thor drone, at 15 kilograms (33 pounds), adds precision-strike capability and can release small munitions while maintaining flight endurance of about 70 minutes when lightly loaded. Under the agreement, Albania will take delivery of 10 drones in the first phase, after which Elbit will support the establishment of a local production facility in northern Albania—laying the foundation for a national defense-industrial base.

This arrangement builds on years of assistance from multiple international partners working to enhance Albania’s military readiness. The United States has been one of the country’s largest contributors, offering armored vehicles, weapons, extensive training, and advisory support to improve Albania’s operational standards and NATO compliance. European allies have also stepped in: Italy has delivered patrol vessels and naval equipment, while Germany has provided communication technologies and logistical support essential for modern military operations.

Turkey has also been a consistent defense partner, supplying drones and training Albanian units in mechanized infantry tactics. Together, these global partnerships underscore Albania’s strategic push to modernize its armed forces, expand domestic production, and strengthen its position within NATO’s southeastern flank.
