Taiwan has taken delivery of a second batch of 42 US-made M1A2T Abrams tanks, strengthening its armored capabilities amid persistent threats from China. The tanks arrived at the Port of Taipei and were transported to a military training center in Hsinchu’s Hukou Township for further distribution.

The handover was briefly postponed due to stormy conditions but was completed with tight security. The tanks were discreetly moved using covered flatbed trucks escorted by police and armed forces through public roads.

Approved in 2019, Taiwan’s purchase of 108 Abrams tanks from the US is a key move in boosting its land-based defense readiness. The first 38 tanks arrived in late 2024, followed by personnel training and planned large-scale live-fire exercises in mid-2025.

The M1A2 Abrams, known for its advanced protection and firepower, includes composite armor, a 120mm main cannon, and multiple machine guns. With a powerful gas turbine engine, it offers high mobility and endurance, suitable for modern combat scenarios.
