As part of its renewed focus on national defense, Denmark has signed an agreement with MBDA France for the purchase of two VL MICA air defense systems, scheduled for mid-2026 delivery and initial operational status expected by the end of that year. The procurement coincides with additional investments: Denmark is adding the German-made IRIS-T SLM and the Norwegian NASAMS systems, together amounting to roughly $919 million, to protect against threats at short and medium ranges. The highly mobile VL MICA system consists of a vehicle-based command post, radar, and multiple launchers—each capable of rapid, multiple missile launches and rapid redeployment. Unique among global missile systems, its projectiles can be fitted with either infrared or radio frequency guidance, maximizing flexibility in intercepting targets at distances up to 20km and altitudes of 30,000 feet.

In a separate development, Germany’s Hensoldt will enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities by supplying TRML-4D and SPEXER 2000 radars under a €340 million deal. The TRML-4D radar, vital to the IRIS-T SLM system, can track up to 1,500 targets across a 250km radius, while the SPEXER 2000 brings short-range surveillance for use on air defense and counter-drone systems like Skyranger 30 and Feldlager. These advanced systems will bolster Ukraine’s ability to detect and engage a wide spectrum of airborne threats, reflecting Europe’s growing investment in integrated defense technology.
