Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has launched JS Akashi (AGS-5107), a state-of-the-art ocean survey ship for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, from its Shimonoseki facility.
The vessel will be utilized for marine research—charting the seabed, recording ocean temperatures, and identifying resource zones for naval and scientific gains.
Its name comes from Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, a city with historical significance in Japan’s defense industry during WWII.
