Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi has confirmed that the ambitious Project-76 is in its initial stages, focusing on the development of a new class of indigenous conventional diesel-electric submarines. This project marks a major milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in submarine technology, building upon advancements made through previous programs like Project-75 and Project-75I.Admiral Tripathi indicated that the design phase for Project-76 is already underway, with the final blueprint expected to be completed by 2028. Following this, the project will seek approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which is projected around 2033-34, paving the way for construction to begin.Project-76 will be India’s first submarine class to be fully designed in-house, utilizing expertise gained from collaborations and technology transfers under earlier initiatives. Both the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) are currently preparing competing designs for evaluation by the Navy.
