The US Army has awarded Oshkosh Defense a contract to deliver 97 FMTV A2 Low-Velocity Airdrop cargo vehicles, reinforcing the service’s ability to support highly mobile forces through airborne logistics. The order includes a mix of 4×4 and 6×6 configurations, tailored to meet the resupply needs of Mobile Brigade Combat Teams operating in contested and austere environments.
Designed for rapid airdrop of supplies and equipment, the FMTV A2 LVAD minimizes dependence on established airfields and ground infrastructure. The contract also incorporates Arctic capability kits, enabling operations in extreme cold and remote terrain, a key requirement as the Army expands its focus on high-latitude and Arctic operations.
The FMTV A2 4×4 variant demonstrated its airdrop capability through multiple successful drops at Yuma Proving Grounds in early 2025 following testing that began in 2024. The vehicle is offered in 2.5-ton and 3-ton cargo configurations, with payloads of 5,000 pounds and 6,000 pounds, respectively. The 3-ton model delivers a top speed of 62 mph and a cargo volume of 145.8 cubic feet, supporting flexible mission loads.
The larger FMTV A2 6×6 platform, which completed airdrop trials in 2024, offers significantly increased capacity for heavier logistics missions. Its 8-ton Cargo variant provides a payload of 16,000 pounds and a cargo bed volume of 164.7 cubic feet, while maintaining a maximum speed of 60 mph. Together, the FMTV A2 LVAD fleet strengthens the US Army’s airborne logistics capability, ensuring sustained mobility and operational reach across diverse combat environments.
