Rolls-Royce has been selected to power South Korea’s Ulsan-class frigate program, which consists of six new ships. The package includes the MT30 gas turbine, diesel generators, and advanced propeller systems.
Under the agreement, the diesel-electric system will operate during cruising phases, while the MT30 turbine will support high-speed missions. The electric motors are being developed in partnership with local firm STX-Engines.
The contract aligns with South Korea’s 2021 $3B naval development initiative, and Hanwha Ocean has been tasked with building the first two frigates. The propulsion solution is designed to offer efficiency, speed, and operational flexibility across the fleet.
