An S80 class submarine’s hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) has been installed by Navantia’s shipyard in Cartagena. This is the first submarine equipped with a third-generation AIP. Admiral Aniceto Rosique Nieto, the director of Spanish national armaments, was present to commemorate the milestone. This achievement represents a significant turning point in the S-80 Program and is unheard of in Spanish shipbuilding history. With the use of this technology, the Spanish Navy’s submarines will be able to stay underwater for longer than the few days that traditional diesel-electric submarines can.
