TKMS ATLAS UK has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence to develop a new-generation torpedo countermeasure capability for Royal Navy submarines. The effort comes under the Next Generation Countermeasure programme, which sits within the broader Underwater Defensive Aids Suite. Babcock will support the project by supplying countermeasure launcher technology and assisting with integration on existing submarine platforms. The NGCM system is intended to provide protection against changing underwater threats and will follow a spiral-development model, enabling the capability to evolve through successive improvements rather than remaining fixed at its initial configuration. Neither the Ministry of Defence nor the companies have publicly confirmed the final contract value. An earlier government procurement notice from April 2024 had indicated an estimated programme value of around £35 million ($47 million). Work is expected to continue for seven years, beginning in October 2025 and extending through October 2032. According to TKMS ATLAS UK, the programme will support around 80 UK-based jobs while delivering the next generation of submarine defensive countermeasure technology.
