The US Army has awarded AM General an $82.2 million contract for additional HMMWVs, extending procurement of the long-serving tactical vehicle even as newer platforms gradually assume some of its missions. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity agreement brings its total potential value to approximately $754.6 million. Individual orders will determine funding and production locations, while the contract is scheduled to remain active until August 2028.The Army has continued purchasing updated Humvee variants because the vehicle still fills a number of utility and tactical roles. Recent procurement actions have included additional M1165A1B3 vehicles.AM General began producing the HMMWV for the Army in the 1980s, and the platform eventually became one of the most widely recognized US military vehicles, with more than 280,000 units produced by 2012.At the same time, the Army is transitioning to newer platforms. AM General’s JLTV production award is intended to replace the HMMWV in more demanding tactical roles, while the ISV provides a lighter mobility solution for infantry units. The Humvee continues to receive upgrades and remains available in multiple configurations. Depending on the variant, it can carry personnel, weapons, and specialized equipment, with some versions equipped for machine guns, grenade launchers, or anti-tank weapons.Powered by a diesel V8 engine and automatic transmission, the platform can reach speeds above 70 mph and has a range of roughly 350 miles.
