Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has unveiled the latest addition to the Japan Coast Guard fleet with the launch of JS Yashima (PLH-46), a modern large patrol vessel built at the company’s Enoura Plant in Shimonoseki. Developed under a government-funded modernization initiative valued at nearly 20 billion yen, the vessel reflects Japan’s continued emphasis on strengthening maritime security, emergency response, and coastal surveillance capabilities.Designed as the successor to the aging 1988-built JS Yashima, the new ship belongs to the updated Mizuho-class and replaces a vessel whose deteriorating hull condition made continued service increasingly impractical. Retaining the historic “Yashima” designation also preserves an important element of Japan’s maritime heritage.The patrol vessel measures approximately 134 meters in length and exceeds 25 knots in maximum speed. A spacious flight deck and dual-helicopter hangar enable continuous airborne surveillance and rescue operations using medium-lift helicopters. These aviation assets greatly extend the ship’s operational reach during search-and-rescue missions, maritime policing, and disaster relief activities.Equipped with medium-caliber weapon systems and remotely controlled water cannons, the vessel balances security enforcement with humanitarian responsibilities. Following completion of all mechanical, electronic, and combat systems integration, the patrol ship is scheduled for delivery in 2027, further enhancing Japan’s maritime security infrastructure.
