The UK government has unveiled Project Nightfall, a program designed to rapidly develop mobile tactical ballistic missile systems for Ukraine as part of its ongoing military support to Kyiv. The initiative seeks to provide Ukrainian forces with an enhanced long-range precision strike capability to counter Russian operations deep behind the front lines.
Under the program, the UK Ministry of Defence plans to field missiles equipped with a 200-kilogram warhead and a strike range exceeding 500 kilometers, enabling attacks on heavily defended targets. The missiles are being engineered to operate in environments saturated with electronic jamming and electromagnetic disruption, ensuring reliability against sophisticated Russian air defense and electronic warfare systems.
Project Nightfall places a strong emphasis on flexibility and survivability, with launch systems designed to be vehicle-agnostic, capable of rapid salvo launches, and able to redeploy quickly after firing. Production targets call for up to 10 missiles per month, with affordability a key factor, limiting the cost to £800,000 per unit to enable scalable manufacturing.
To accelerate development, the UK will award £9 million contracts to three industry teams, tasking them with delivering initial missile systems within a year for live testing. Contracts are expected to be finalized in March, reinforcing the UK’s role as one of Ukraine’s leading defense partners. The initiative complements broader UK-Ukraine cooperation, including sustained financial aid, deep-strike drones, and joint defense production programs focused on future military technologies.
