Kosovo has expanded its anti-tank missile arsenal with a new delivery of Turkey’s OMTAS guided weapon system, reinforcing its push to modernize ground forces and improve defenses against armored vehicles. The acquisition supports Kosovo’s broader strategy of developing layered and flexible anti-armor capabilities within the Kosovo Security Force.

Developed by Turkey, OMTAS is a medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile engineered to counter modern armored threats and fortified targets. The missile can be fired from ground-based tripods or integrated onto vehicles, allowing forces to adapt the system to a variety of mission profiles. Its design prioritizes precision, survivability, and rapid engagement in both static defense and maneuver operations.

Kosovo’s leadership has highlighted that increasing the variety of anti-tank systems is critical to improving operational effectiveness. Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci noted that a diversified missile inventory enables units to select the most appropriate weapon for each scenario, rather than depending on a single capability, thereby improving battlefield resilience.

The latest delivery aligns with Kosovo’s growing defense partnership with Turkey, which has positioned itself as a major exporter of modern missile systems to emerging and mid-level armed forces. The Turkish Armed Forces remain the largest operator of OMTAS, having fielded the missile widely across infantry and vehicle-mounted units since the mid-2010s. Azerbaijan has also adopted the system, showcasing it publicly as part of its post-2020 ground force modernization efforts.
