The government of New Zealand has confirmed a US$1.16 billion contract for five Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, strengthening its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The move is part of a broader modernization initiative valued at US$1.57 billion, which also includes new Airbus A321XLR transport aircraft.
Equipped with advanced weapon systems such as torpedoes, Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, heavy machine guns, and precision-guided rockets, the Seahawks will provide the Royal New Zealand Navy and Air Force with enhanced strike and patrol options. The package underscores Wellington’s intent to upgrade forces that have long relied on aging and maintenance-challenged aircraft and ships.
The Defence Force has also indicated plans to integrate unmanned drones into future operations, expanding both reconnaissance and combat capabilities. This gradual shift demonstrates New Zealand’s recognition of emerging maritime threats in the Indo-Pacific region.
Meanwhile, the two Airbus A321XLRs will replace the troubled 757 fleet, which has drawn criticism after repeated breakdowns interrupted international travel for senior officials. Defence leaders expect the new aircraft to enter service around 2028, boosting reliability for both military and governmental missions.
