In a continued effort to enhance battlefield efficiency, FN America has secured a $4.9-million contract to deliver its advanced M240L lightweight medium machine guns to the U.S. Army. The weapon was first introduced to U.S. forces in 2010, following a developmental push to create a lighter yet highly durable machine gun suitable for modern infantry demands.
A major highlight of the M240L is its significant weight reduction—approximately 18% less than the older M240B model. This improvement is achieved through an innovative titanium design, making the weapon about 5 pounds (2.2 kg) lighter while preserving its 7.62×51mm NATO-caliber firepower and operational range.
The design philosophy behind the M240L is deeply rooted in the time-tested FN MAG 58, a general-purpose machine gun adopted by the U.S. military in the 1970s. This platform has influenced the entire M240 family, a line of guns known for reliability, standardized NATO compatibility, and robust performance in varied operational environments.
