AeroVironment (AV) has partnered with Arkeus to equip the JUMP 20 uncrewed autonomous system (UAS) with the Hyperspectral Optical Radar (HSOR) payload, creating a next-generation drone solution optimized for modern surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The collaboration addresses the growing demand for long-range, AI-enabled intelligence platforms capable of operating effectively in environments with electromagnetic constraints or poor visibility.
The HSOR payload distinguishes itself with its AI-powered data processing engine, which can simultaneously track and analyze hundreds of targets across diverse terrains. It functions without recalibration or hardware adjustments, enabling continuous operations in land, sea, and coastal missions. AV stated that the system provides more than eight times the operational range of conventional EO/IR sensors, giving commanders a decisive advantage in situational awareness.
Through hyperspectral imaging, HSOR interprets material light signatures, extracting data on water depth, vegetation coverage, and environmental conditions. These capabilities extend the platform’s utility to tasks such as border patrol, maritime domain awareness, environmental monitoring, counter-narcotics missions, and humanitarian search-and-rescue efforts. Its ability to detect, classify, and deceive adversary targets adds further operational value.
The JUMP 20 UAS provides the endurance and flexibility needed to maximize HSOR’s performance. Featuring a fixed-wing design with vertical takeoff and landing, the system can operate for over 13 hours and reach ranges of 115 miles (185 km) within line of sight or more than 575 miles (926 km) in beyond-line-of-sight scenarios through satellite links. With a payload capacity of 30 pounds (14 kg) and compatibility with standard control systems, the platform is adaptable to a wide range of missions. Operators can also deploy it in under 30 minutes, making it highly mobile and responsive in tactical environments.
International adoption of the JUMP 20 is growing. In April, Italy finalized a $46.6 million acquisition to replace its older Shadow drones, marking another milestone in AV’s expanding global footprint. Earlier this year, the company introduced the JUMP 20-X, a variant designed for maritime operations that integrates AI for autonomous cross-domain awareness, underscoring the system’s role as a scalable solution for future defense and security missions.
