In a historic move, the Netherlands will spend €500 million ($577 million) on American weapons destined for Ukraine, becoming the first NATO country to fund an entire shipment through a newly established fast-track delivery system, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defence.
The purchase falls under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, an initiative jointly launched last month by the US and NATO leadership. The goal is to enable faster transfers of military equipment by using existing US inventories.
Under this mechanism, nations contribute funds to Washington in exchange for immediate access to pre-positioned weapons and ammunition, which are then delivered directly to Ukraine. This bypasses longer procurement timelines and enhances battlefield responsiveness.
The Dutch government’s decision signals a strong commitment to Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, as the conflict nears its third year since beginning in February 2022. It may also encourage other NATO members to adopt the same approach.
