Australia has formally reached initial operational capability for its MQ-4C Triton remotely piloted aircraft and MC-55A Peregrine electronic warfare jets, while also completing upgrades to its P-8A Poseidon fleet. The announcement was made by Defence Minister Richard Marles and Air Marshal Stephen Chappell after the new systems underwent operational testing and preparation for service acceptance. Triton is intended to provide persistent long-range surveillance, while Peregrine contributes electronic warfare and intelligence functions. The P-8A fleet provides another major element of Australia’s maritime and airborne surveillance capability. Together, the systems support Canberra’s broader effort to improve intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare capacity. The milestones are linked to the country’s National Defence Strategy, under which Australia plans to invest around A$5.5 billion over the coming decade in these areas. The declaration of initial operational capability represents a transition from acquisition and testing toward routine military use. The completed P-8A improvements also provide Australia with an upgraded multi-mission fleet while the Triton and Peregrine introduce additional specialized capabilities.
