Germany has established a new testing and research center focused on protecting sensitive locations from unauthorized or hostile drones. The facility at the former Cochstedt airport in Saxony-Anhalt will operate under the German Aerospace Center. Researchers will conduct realistic trials involving technologies for locating, identifying, monitoring, and neutralizing unmanned aircraft. The new facility builds on DLR’s existing work at the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. The project comes as Germany faces increasing concerns about drone activity around airports and other critical infrastructure. A recent security incident involving an explosives-carrying drone near an Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport has intensified attention on the issue. The German government is responding by strengthening its counter-drone capabilities. Plans to increase federal police personnel assigned to drone threats are part of the wider effort. Authorities recognize that modern drones can become faster, more autonomous, and harder to distinguish from legitimate aircraft, requiring continuous upgrades to detection and response systems.
