The US Air Force has awarded Boeing a new contract for the production of four more MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters, expanding the fleet intended to modernize critical support and security missions. This procurement follows a September contract worth $173 million for eight aircraft, along with an earlier low-rate initial production order for 26 helicopters. The latest acquisition raises the total number of MH-139As ordered to 38 units, with more than half already delivered to the service.

Developed to replace the long-serving UH-1N Huey, the MH-139A introduces substantial performance improvements. The helicopter delivers greater speed, extended operational range, and significantly higher payload capacity, enabling the Air Force to conduct a broader range of missions more efficiently. These upgrades are central to the service’s efforts to improve readiness and reduce sustainment challenges associated with legacy platforms.

The Grey Wolf is derived from the Leonardo AW139 commercial helicopter and customized by Boeing for military use. It is optimized for nuclear security support, emergency response, personnel transport, and logistical operations, as well as convoy escort missions. Aircraft already delivered have been integrated into operational training, demonstrating the platform’s readiness for real-world missions, including those involving sensitive nuclear assets.

Technically, the MH-139A features a maximum takeoff weight of 7,000 kilograms, a cruising speed of 146 knots, and a top speed of 167 knots. It can operate at ranges up to 410 nautical miles and altitudes reaching 20,000 feet. These capabilities position the Grey Wolf as a key enabler of the US Air Force’s rotary-wing modernization strategy for decades to come.
