Boeing has been awarded a $173-million contract to produce eight more MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters for the U.S. Air Force, along with training and sustainment support. This order expands the total fleet on contract to 34 aircraft, as Boeing continues to ramp up deliveries—18 helicopters have already been handed over, including 12 from earlier low-rate production phases.

The new aircraft are set to be deployed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, where they will bolster the service’s operational and security missions. Derived from Leonardo’s AW139 civilian model, the MH-139A has been modified by Boeing to meet stringent military requirements. It is designed for critical missions like rescue operations, surveillance, transport of personnel and cargo, and nuclear base protection.

Assembly of the helicopters is conducted in Philadelphia, while Leonardo supplies airframes from its Italian facility. The Boeing-Leonardo partnership enables the integration of advanced avionics, defense countermeasures, and encrypted communications systems that enhance the platform’s capability in complex operational environments.

The MH-139A Grey Wolf represents the Air Force’s modern replacement for the aging UH-1N Huey fleet, which has served for over five decades. Following successful operational testing, the helicopter has proven its versatility in roles such as base defense and nuclear convoy escort. Recently, it participated in large-scale exercises at Maxwell Air Force Base and supported trials under the 582nd Helicopter Group, marking steady progress toward full operational deployment.
