The Republic of Singapore Air Force has achieved a “world-first” capability after receiving full certification for Automatic Air-to-Air Refueling on its Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft. Issued by Spain’s National Institute for Aerospace Technology, the certification validates the maturity and safety of the A3R system, authorizing fully automated refueling operations during both day and night missions.
This milestone follows a comprehensive testing and qualification effort involving Airbus, the RSAF, and Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency. Flight trials were conducted across multiple locations in Spain and Singapore, encompassing varied operational conditions, aircraft combinations, and expanded flight envelopes to ensure robustness and mission reliability.
Developed under Airbus’s SMART MRTT roadmap and launched in 2020, the A3R capability integrates automation and computer vision technologies to enhance aerial refueling efficiency. The system automatically identifies, tracks, and connects with receiver aircraft, significantly reducing operator workload while increasing precision and safety during refueling operations.
Singapore’s A330 MRTT fleet has played a leading role in advancing automated refueling technologies. The aircraft achieved a first in 2022 as the world’s first international tanker certified for daylight automatic refueling. Further testing in 2023 successfully demonstrated nighttime automated operations, including hundreds of refueling contacts with F-15SG and F-16 fighters. Earlier campaigns also confirmed compatibility with Portuguese F-16 aircraft, highlighting strong interoperability with allied air forces.
