Serco has been awarded a £7.8 million ($10 million) contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to provide maintenance and logistics services for the EJ200 engines used in the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon aircraft. The five-year agreement marks a shift to a direct service model between Serco and the RAF, transitioning away from prior arrangements managed via Rolls-Royce.

Work under the contract will be carried out at two major RAF bases — Coningsby in Lincolnshire and Lossiemouth in Scotland — where Serco will manage engine maintenance, inspections, and parts logistics. The initiative supports 26 skilled technical and logistics roles, highlighting the government’s effort to strengthen in-country defense sustainment and technical employment opportunities.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, a twin-engine multirole fighter developed by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, remains the backbone of the RAF’s combat air fleet since entering service in 2003. Its EJ200 engines, capable of producing 90 kilonewtons of thrust each, enable the jet to cruise at supersonic speeds for extended durations without afterburner use. Featuring advanced health monitoring systems and high endurance under thermal and mechanical stress, the EJ200 ensures the Typhoon’s superior agility and long-term reliability across diverse mission profiles including air policing and rapid response duties.
