Saab has received a 4-billion krona ($360 million) contract from Sweden to extend maintenance, upgrades, and operational support for its Gripen C/D and E fighter jets. The new deal continues a 2020 framework that set the foundation for long-term Gripen sustainment through technical services, spare parts, and advanced software improvements.
Under this agreement, Saab will deliver system support, component repair, and training for air and ground personnel during 2026–2027, with options for continuation through 2029. The package includes ongoing mission system updates to ensure that both Gripen variants remain compatible with modern warfare and evolving operational demands.
The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) signed the contract as part of a national initiative to preserve air power self-reliance while supporting domestic jobs. Saab noted that the program sustains the Gripen C/D fleet and aids the smooth transition to the newer Gripen E model, which is nearing large-scale deployment.
This renewed contract reflects Sweden’s continued focus on strengthening its air combat capabilities. The government has been investing in upgrades to older aircraft, modernizing mission systems, and improving electronic warfare suites. Saab is simultaneously scaling up Gripen E production for Sweden and export customers like Brazil, while the Swedish Air Force expands road-base infrastructure to boost flexibility and survivability in crisis scenarios.
