The Royal Australian Air Force has received its first MC-55A Peregrine aircraft, formally introducing Australia’s inaugural airborne intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare capability. Delivered to RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia, the arrival marks the debut of the nation’s most advanced crewed ISR platform and represents a significant boost to Australia’s ability to operate in electromagnetically contested environments.

Developed under a U.S. Foreign Military Sales arrangement, the MC-55A is a heavily modified Gulfstream G550, with mission systems integrated by L3Harris Technologies. The aircraft completed extensive integration and mission testing in the United States before being handed over to Australia as the lead platform in a planned four-aircraft fleet. Additional aircraft will remain under U.S. Air Force oversight in the near term to support training, tactics refinement, and pre-delivery activities, ensuring a smooth transition to full operational capability.

The Peregrine’s mission system is designed to collect, process, and distribute intelligence across the electromagnetic spectrum, enabling advanced signals intelligence and electronic warfare operations. Although technical specifics are classified, the aircraft is believed to incorporate electronic support, electronic attack, and secure communications suites, allowing it to function both as an intelligence collector and as a node within wider command-and-control networks. L3Harris’ experience in missionizing business jets, including work on platforms such as Compass Call, underpins the aircraft’s design and operational concept.

Based at RAAF Base Edinburgh and operated by No. 10 Squadron, the MC-55A Peregrine will complement Australia’s existing ISR and maritime patrol forces. The aircraft is intended to operate alongside assets such as the P-8A Poseidon, MQ-4C Triton UAV, and Royal Australian Navy surface combatants, while sharing data with air and land forces. By enabling real-time intelligence sharing and electronic battlespace awareness, the MC-55A supports Australia’s shift toward networked, multi-domain operations and enhanced information superiority.
