The United States government has officially approved a potential $2.6 billion sale of HH-60W combat rescue helicopters, along with associated equipment and services, to Norway, a key NATO ally that shares a border with Russia. The announcement, made on Friday by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), highlights a significant move to bolster Norway’s aerial capabilities in the face of evolving regional security challenges.
According to the DSCA, the acquisition will significantly enhance Norway’s combat search and rescue as well as special operations capacities, improving its readiness to counter both present and future threats. The helicopters will be used not only to defend Norway’s own territory but also to contribute to NATO operations and support its allied partners.
The U.S. State Department has already approved the proposed sale, while the DSCA has submitted the necessary formal notification to Congress, which is required to finalize the deal. The agency also noted that Norway is fully capable of integrating the new helicopters and related support systems into its existing military infrastructure without difficulty.
