The Lithuanian government has confirmed its decision to procure the Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft, underscoring the country’s effort to modernize its airlift fleet amid growing regional security demands. The acquisition aligns with broader NATO trends, as more allies adopt the C-390 to improve strategic mobility and interoperability.
Lithuania intends to acquire three C-390 aircraft, with the first deliveries scheduled to begin by the end of the decade. This new fleet will replace the aging C-27J Spartan aircraft, providing a step-change in capability, efficiency, and mission readiness.
With the ability to transport 26 tons of cargo, the Millennium can handle a variety of loads, from helicopters and armored vehicles to humanitarian aid packages. Its 470-knot cruising speed and 3,260 km operational range with 23 tons onboard allow for swift response and extended coverage in NATO-led missions.
The aircraft’s jet-powered design provides greater speed and survivability compared to turboprop transports, while its rugged configuration enables takeoff and landing from unprepared or austere runways. This dual-role adaptability makes the C-390 equally suited for frontline deployments, crisis response, and disaster-relief operations, reinforcing Lithuania’s air mobility for the coming decades.
