The Italian Ministry of Defence has launched a 1.22-billion-euro ($1.41 billion) procurement program to acquire 29 additional AW249 Fenice attack helicopters, reinforcing the Italian Army’s modernization efforts. Once approved, this order will raise the fleet to 48 helicopters, completing Italy’s replacement of its long-serving A129 Mangusta attack fleet introduced in the 1990s.

This acquisition represents the third phase of the program initiated in 2016, focusing on 29 new helicopters in Full Operational Capability configuration and the upgrade of 19 previously ordered units. The project, running from 2026 to 2032, includes certification, production, logistics support, and a pilot training system, ensuring long-term sustainability for Italy’s attack helicopter operations.

Built by Leonardo, the AW249 Fenice reflects Italy’s commitment to next-generation battlefield technologies. The 8.3-ton rotorcraft offers a payload capacity exceeding 2,000 kilograms and can reach speeds of 155 knots (287 km/h) with an operational range of 430 nautical miles (796 km). Its versatility enables it to conduct missions such as close air support, escort, and precision strike operations.

Armed with guided missiles, 70mm rockets, and a 20mm cannon, the AW249 integrates advanced network-centric features, allowing real-time data sharing and crew-uncrewed teaming. Operators can deploy air-launched effectors directly from the cockpit, giving the platform enhanced strike range, situational awareness, and combat effectiveness across complex environments.
