The United States has authorized a potential USD 3.8 billion Foreign Military Sale to Israel for 30 AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced in a notice dated January 30, 2026. Approved by the U.S. State Department and submitted to Congress, the deal supports Israel’s effort to recapitalize its attack helicopter force as existing Apache variants reach the practical limits of further modernization.

According to DSCA, the proposed sale would provide Israel with new-build AH-64E aircraft, associated mission systems, training for aircrews and maintainers, and long-term logistical support. The acquisition is intended to replace older AH-64A and AH-64D helicopters currently in Israeli service, many of which were designed around Cold War-era airframes and avionics despite receiving incremental local upgrades over the years.

The AH-64E Guardian represents a generational upgrade in performance and survivability. Its T700-GE-701D engines deliver greater power and efficiency, improving lift capacity and maneuverability under heavy weapons loads and in high-temperature environments. The aircraft’s advanced composite rotor system increases cruise speed and range, offering improved responsiveness and endurance compared to earlier Apache models.

Equally significant are the Guardian’s digital and sensor enhancements. The AH-64E integrates an open systems avionics architecture, modern data links, and improved cockpit displays that support faster software upgrades and seamless integration into network-centric operations. Its modernized targeting and night-vision sensors, combined with the Longbow fire control radar, allow crews to detect, classify, and engage multiple threats while minimizing exposure, reinforcing Israel’s ability to conduct precision strike missions in contested and air-defense-heavy environments.
