The Indonesian Air Force has received its first Airbus A400M Atlas at Halim Air Force Base, Jakarta, as part of a 2021 contract aimed at upgrading the nation’s strategic airlift fleet. The agreement includes comprehensive training and logistical support, with a second A400M slated for delivery in 2026.

With this acquisition, Indonesia joins nine other nations operating the A400M, becoming Southeast Asia’s second user after Malaysia. The aircraft’s arrival significantly enhances Indonesia’s airlift, humanitarian, and defense logistics capabilities—key for an archipelago that spans thousands of islands.

The A400M Atlas combines heavy-lift performance with short and unpaved runway operations, carrying up to 37 tonnes of payload and reaching 2,400 nautical miles (4,445 km) with 30 tonnes on board. Its versatile configuration allows for troop deployment, cargo delivery, aeromedical evacuation, and rapid disaster relief missions across the country.

Airbus confirmed that the A400M is also equipped for aerial refueling operations, broadening its mission scope. Furthermore, Indonesia is assessing the installation of a modular firefighting system, which would allow the A400M to transform into a large-capacity water bomber capable of dropping up to 20,000 liters (5,283 gallons) per sortie. This multi-role potential underscores Jakarta’s investment in flexible, mission-ready air mobility solutions.
