Armenia is moving closer to signing a landmark defense agreement with India, reportedly worth between $2.5 billion and $3 billion, for the purchase of Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Sources indicate that the negotiations are in their final phase, as Yerevan seeks to balance regional air power following Azerbaijan’s procurement of 40 JF-17C Block-III fighters from Pakistan.
If finalized, this will mark Armenia’s largest-ever arms deal and further solidify India-Armenia defense ties. The first deliveries are expected by 2027, with HAL customizing the jets to include Uttam AESA radar systems, Astra BVR missiles, and advanced electronic warfare suites. These modifications will create one of the most technologically advanced Su-30MKI variants in the global export market.
The Su-30MKI, designed jointly by Russia’s Sukhoi and HAL, has served as the cornerstone of India’s air superiority since its induction in 2002. The aircraft boasts supermaneuverable AL-31FP engines, a payload capacity exceeding 8 tons, and the versatility to deploy a range of precision and standoff weapons — including the BrahMos-A supersonic cruise missile.
India’s ongoing “Super Sukhoi” modernization drive, initiated in 2023, aims to upgrade over 150 aircraft with digital cockpits, modern sensors, and compatibility for Astra Mk-2 and Mk-3 missiles. HAL has been expanding its export outreach under this program, promoting the Su-30MKI in Egypt, Malaysia, and Armenia, underscoring the aircraft’s role in India’s growing aerospace exports. The platform’s recent successful BrahMos-A flight trials have further cemented its reputation as a formidable multirole strike asset on the global stage.
