In a breakthrough moment for the UK aerospace sector, Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) has secured its first defense order for the Airlander 10 hybrid airship, marking a major step in the platform’s evolution from a civilian concept to a dual-use military asset. An unidentified defense customer has reserved three units of the Airlander 10 to harness its long-endurance capabilities for surveillance, transport, and multi-domain operations.

HAV highlighted that the Airlander 10 can remain airborne for up to five days without refueling, making it ideal for persistent ISR missions or extended logistic support. Its hybrid construction and ability to launch from nearly any surface—including grass fields and water—provide significant tactical advantages in remote or denied regions.

Engineered with a payload capacity of more than 3 tonnes (6,613 pounds), the Airlander can integrate high-performance radar systems, sensors, and communications arrays to support intelligence and security operations. Its quiet acoustic profile and low infrared footprint make it harder to detect, while its fuel-efficient engines reduce costs and carbon emissions compared to conventional aircraft.

According to HAV, this defense order represents just the beginning of broader military adoption. The company expects additional procurement interest as global defense forces pursue affordable, persistent airborne surveillance solutions that can augment satellites, drones, and manned platforms in integrated networked operations.
