Reflecting a wider shift toward cost-efficient air combat solutions, Saab is assessing APKWS integration to give the Gripen a scalable counter-UAV option. With individual rockets costing a fraction of traditional missiles, the system offers a sustainable response to low-cost threats such as loitering munitions. Similar modifications have been pursued by the US Air Force for the F-15E and explored for the Eurofighter Typhoon. Saab’s initiative highlights the importance of adaptable, economical firepower in modern air operations.
