L3Harris Technologies has completed and delivered the first overhauled P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), marking a major milestone in a long-term contract aimed at maintaining and enhancing the Navy’s fleet readiness. The overhaul took place at L3Harris’ depot facility in Waco, Texas, where comprehensive maintenance, repair, and structural upgrades began earlier in 2024 and are expected to continue through September 2029.
This delivery is the initial achievement under a contract awarded by the U.S. Navy on September 30, 2024, which calls for depot-level support of up to 139 P-8A aircraft. Work under the agreement includes avionics modernization, structural refurbishment, component overhauls, and systems testing to ensure these aircraft remain mission-ready for years to come.
The P-8A Poseidon plays a crucial role in anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare, maritime patrol, and ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) missions. This overhaul program is part of the Navy’s broader effort to sustain fleet availability and mission capability. In addition to serving the U.S. Navy, L3Harris will also provide support for foreign military sales customers operating the P-8A.
At present, seven aircraft are undergoing overhaul at the Texas facility, with nine total units expected to be inducted during the first year of the agreement. All currently serviced units are scheduled for delivery within 2025, reinforcing the Navy’s operational strength across global deployments.
