The first F-35A Lightning II combat aircraft for the Finnish Defence Force has been rolled out by Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas, underscoring Finland’s progress in fielding a next-generation fighter fleet. The launch follows the aircraft’s final assembly completion earlier this year and marks the initial delivery phase of a landmark defense procurement program.
Finland’s F-35 acquisition is rooted in a 2021 US Foreign Military Sales deal, under which Helsinki plans to procure up to 64 fifth-generation F-35A jets at an estimated cost of $10 billion. As part of the early induction process, eight aircraft will be stationed in Arkansas to support Finnish Air Force pilot training and maintenance certification.
Once transferred to operational service, the stealth fighters will be deployed at Rovaniemi’s Lapland Air Wing and Siilinjärvi’s Karelia Air Wing, significantly boosting Finland’s air combat capability and situational awareness. Lockheed Martin stated that the incoming fleet will represent Europe’s largest concentration of F-35 aircraft, reinforcing Finland’s role within allied airpower structures.
Beyond military capability, the program also delivers industrial benefits through the participation of 30 Finnish companies in the F-35 global supply chain, which spans more than 1,900 suppliers worldwide. The F-35 Lightning II is now in service with 20 nations globally, including 13 European operators, highlighting its growing footprint across the region.
