Embraer has delivered the first batch of A-29N Super Tucano aircraft to Portugal, marking the start of a major modernization effort for the Portuguese Air Force. The three aircraft touched down at Alverca do Ribatejo, just outside Lisbon, where they will be upgraded to meet NATO interoperability requirements.

Portugal approved the €200 million ($210 million) deal in late 2024, which covers a total of 12 aircraft along with a comprehensive support package. Beyond the planes themselves, the contract provides a flight simulator, pilot training, and logistics assistance to ensure long-term sustainability of operations.

The A-29 Super Tucano is recognized for its versatility as a multi-mission light attack and training aircraft. Equipped with advanced avionics, targeting systems, and integrated weapons, it offers both combat capability and cost-effective operation for NATO allies.

The aircraft’s performance specifications include a top speed of 320 knots (592 km/h), a cruising speed of 280 knots (519 km/h), and a stall speed of 80 knots (148 km/h). Endurance is equally notable, with flight times exceeding three hours on internal fuel and extending beyond five hours when equipped with two external tanks.
