Bell Textron has emerged as the exclusive contractor for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s SPRINT X-Plane initiative, after outperforming Aurora Flight Sciences, a subsidiary of Boeing, in the competition. This victory marks a significant milestone in the development of a next-generation high-speed, runway-independent aircraft.

Under Phase 2 of the program, Bell is tasked with finalizing the aircraft’s design, construction, ground trials, and airworthiness certification. According to DARPA, the prototype demonstrator is expected to be completed by 2027, with flight testing slated for 2028.

The Speed and Runway Independent Technologies (SPRINT) program was launched in March 2023 in collaboration with U.S. Special Operations Command, targeting a revolutionary aircraft capable of merging jet-like speeds with vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities. The envisioned platform should be able to cruise at 400–450 knots (740–833 km/h) and operate without conventional runways, even in rugged or unprepared terrains.

In addition to the X-plane, Bell is concurrently working on the Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) program for the U.S. Army, a project aimed at replacing the aging UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter fleet with a more advanced, long-range alternative.
