In a major boost to its military modernization efforts, Germany has signed a deal worth nearly €1 billion ($1.2 billion) to acquire 20 more Airbus H145M helicopters. The move reinforces Berlin’s long-term strategy to modernize its armed forces and expand both combat and training capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.
The new aircraft will be delivered between 2027 and 2029 as part of a framework contract signed in 2023, allowing Germany to procure up to 82 H145Ms. To date, 62 helicopters have been ordered, reflecting consistent investment in the light utility platform. Over the aircraft’s lifetime, fleet operation and maintenance are projected to cost about €3 billion ($3.5 billion) through 2048, according to a finance ministry paper soon to be reviewed by parliament.
Germany’s latest order includes 15 helicopters configured for combat roles and five for training its special forces, marking a shift toward higher operational readiness. The acquisition will be financed through a special defense fund introduced in 2022 to speed up procurement following Russia’s war in Ukraine, a catalyst for Germany’s renewed focus on defense capability.
Beyond Airbus, the program will involve several domestic suppliers. Hensoldt will equip the aircraft with advanced electronic warfare and night-vision systems, while other contractors will handle communications, avionics, and weapons integration. Together, these upgrades will help ensure the H145M continues to serve as a versatile and cost-effective platform for Germany’s evolving defense needs.
