Washington has canceled the planned deployment of approximately 4,000 American soldiers to Poland as part of ongoing changes to US military positioning in Europe. The decision followed the Pentagon’s announcement that around 5,000 troops would be withdrawn from Germany over the coming months. According to US officials, the order to cancel the Poland deployment came directly from the office of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, even though some military equipment and personnel had already begun preparations for overseas transfer. The move reportedly caught Polish authorities by surprise, leading to criticism from several US lawmakers who argued that the lack of prior communication undermined trust between allies. Poland’s Defence Minister suggested that the cancellation could be connected to the relocation of forces from Germany. Former President Donald Trump has long advocated reducing the American military footprint in Europe, insisting that NATO allies should assume greater responsibility for regional security and defence spending. The troop reduction plans also emerged during political disagreements regarding the Middle East conflict involving Iran and Israel. NATO officials responded by stating that the reorganization of US forces would not weaken alliance security because several NATO members are increasing their military presence along Eastern Europe.
