Britain is planning major reforms to its defense procurement system to reward contractors that deliver projects efficiently while encouraging greater participation from smaller technology firms. Proposed updates to the Single Source Contract Regulations would allow defense suppliers to earn larger incentive payments for meeting delivery targets and managing risks effectively. At the same time, lower-performing companies would see reduced guaranteed profits on low-risk contracts. The reforms also aim to simplify compliance requirements for small and medium-sized enterprises by increasing reporting thresholds and introducing incentives for self-funded defense innovation. The UK government says the changes are intended to modernize procurement practices, strengthen industrial competitiveness, and accelerate the development of advanced defense technologies.
