A team of Filipino engineers from Mindanao State University has introduced a new concept in maritime warfare—a kamikaze drone disguised as a civilian boat. This vessel is being developed as part of a broader push toward defense self-sufficiency.
The prototype, called the Palid (Philippine Autonomous Littoral Interdiction Drone), made its debut at the SRDP summit hosted by the Philippine Navy in Manila. It is designed to operate in littoral zones and perform autonomous attack or interdiction missions.
The unmanned craft weighs up to 650 kilograms and can reach a top speed of 40 knots (46 mph), making it capable of quick maneuvers in shallow coastal environments. Its design blends in with common watercraft, allowing for potential surprise engagements.
Palid underscores a shift in strategy as the Philippines explores low-cost, high-impact platforms to reinforce maritime security amid regional tensions and growing threats in nearby waters.
