India has marked a major advancement in defense technology by unveiling its first photonic radar system, signaling a leap forward in next-generation sensing capabilities. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this system distinguishes itself from conventional radar technologies by using light-based signals instead of radio waves to detect and track objects.
This innovation opens a new frontier in aerial surveillance and threat detection, particularly against modern challenges such as stealth aircraft, which are designed to evade traditional radar detection. DRDO anticipates that photonic radar will significantly enhance India’s ability to monitor low-observable aerial threats, filling a critical gap in current defense systems.
By leveraging optical technologies, the new radar system offers improved resolution, reduced signal interference, and potentially greater resistance to jamming, making it a promising solution in future electronic warfare scenarios.
